official milk records for english goats
Listed below are annual 365-day lactation certificates that have been issued by independently verified milk recording clubs. The various Milk Recording Clubs have different styles of reporting, but these are the important figures to look out for:
Yield (kgs) - the total yield in this lactation (i.e. since the last kidding). 1 litre weighs 1 kg.
Lact Days - the total number of days this goat has been milking since the last kidding.
% Fat - averaged percentage of fat in the milk throughout the lactation.
This is of relevance for cheese making and soap making. A healthy English goat should be yielding an average of around 3.5% fat.
% Prot (% Protein) - averaged percentage of protein in the milk throughout the lactation.
The average goat will record around 2.5%; English goats appear to have naturally higher protein levels of 3% and above, which is equivalent to the protein content of cows milk, but easier to digest.
% Lact (lactose) - averaged percentage of lactose (milk sugar) in the milk throughout the lactation.
The average goat will record between 4% and 5% which is very similar to cow’s milk, but less than sheep’s milk. If the lactation certificate indicates a “0%”, then that Milk Recording Club doesn’t measure the % Lactose.
All other figures can be safely ignored!
We are currently building this section of the website, so if you have any historic milk records for your registered English goats, please email them to Englishgba@outlook.com and we will upload them here.
